| Statement |
Earlier this year, the United States President,
George Bush shocked the world by announcing
that his country would pull out of the Kyoto
Protocol, an international agreement to prevent
climate change by curbing the use of fossil
fuels. This comes at a time when the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a
series of reports warning of the frightening
potential consequences posed by global warming.
The IPCC has been conducting research on
the science and effects of global warming
along with strategies to combat the problem.
Concerned parties in many countries including
Japan have tried to persuade the U.S. to
stick to the Kyoto Protocol, but the Bush
Administration has so far shown no sign of
reversing its reactionary policy.
Those of us who took part in this Family
Parade in the hope of securing the safety
and happiness of our and future generations
cannot sit back and watch this crisis. We
strongly urge the Bush Administration to
revert to the Kyoto Protocol at once and
ratify the treaty as soon as possible along
with other industrialized nations responsible
for global warming.
At the same time, we demand policymakers
in the Japanese Diet and government, even
without U.S. participation, to stand firm
and push ahead with the protocol, along with
other industrialized countries in the EU
and the rest of the world, so that the protocol
will take effect by the year 2002. |
