Harnessing the “Traditional Wisdom of Sustainability” in the 21st Century
- Preventing Global Warming & Sustaining Biological Diversity Based
on the “Traditional Wisdom” -
Preventing global warming and sustaining biological diversity through the formation of a balanced sustainable society between environment, economy and people has been an urgent global issue.
As a tradition since the Edo Era, Japan has relied on traditional wisdom that led to sustainability such as “Natural Symbiosis”, “Contentment: knowing when one has enough”, and “The Cycle Theory”. Japan Association of Environment and Society for the 21st Century(JAES21) believes that harnessing such teachings will lead to the formation of a balanced sustainable society; thus, for the past two years, based on extensive bibliographical research and workshops, we have compiled 8 principles to the “Traditional Wisdom of sustainability”.
On the occasion of G-8 Ministers for the Environment Assembly to be held in Kobe, we believe that the principles of the “Traditional Wisdom” is an intellectual property prevalent across all mankind. Our desire is to continue examining these principles and to share them with you. Furthermore, we would like to suggest and discuss specific solutions to current issues such as global warming, based on such accumulated wisdom. We would like to extend our invitation to you and look forward to a healthy attendance.
